Interfaith Leaders and G8 - A Call for Action

Anglicans are invited, along with other Christians and people of faith, to host an interfaith dinner or reception or gathering in your community and invite your MP. You can do this any time between now and June 20, 2010. Resources and suggestions for hosting can be found at bit.ly/faithg8. The purpose of these dinners is to talk with your interfaith neighbours and your MP about what message you want to send to Prime Minister and other world leaders in anticipation of the G8 and G20 summits. The G8 and G20 summits will meet this year in Canada from June 25-27, 2010 in Huntsville and Toronto, Ontario.

Interfaith Leaders will meet at the University of Winnipeg, with leadership from the Primate, Archbishop Fred Hiltz. Together they will discuss ways to communicate with world leaders and press them for action on the 2010 Interfaith Summit Statement, A Time for Inspired Leadership and Action, which urges world leaders to inspired leadership and action to address poverty, care for the earth, and invest in peace. March 8, 2010 marks the 99th anniversary of International Women's Day [IWD].

This day rose out of a process of critical debates, struggles and claims in response to oppression of women.  In 1910, Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of globally recognizing one day a year in order to assert the rights of all women.  The proposal was met with unanimous approval and the result was the creation of International Women's Day.  Since this time we have seen many significant changes in women's equality.  In many countries, women attend university, some women have been elected Presidents and some have even walked on the moon.  However, women continue to be underrepresented in politics and business, they are not equally paid to men and globally the health and violence risks they face are far worse than those of men.

IWD recognizes and celebrates the social, political and economic achievements of women and also serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to continue to promote women's equality in political, economic and cultural spheres of life.  This year thousands of events will be held ranging from theatric performances to political rallies and more. Also, this year's International Women's Day coincides with the launch of the World March of Women (WMW)*. CESO encourages you to partake in events in your community.  To see a list of activities in English please click here.   To see a list of activities in French please click here.

Anglican Church of Canada Launches new Gift Guide

February 25, 2010 - The Anglican Church of Canada is pleased to announce the launch of Acts of Faith; A Guide to Supporting the Ministries of the Anglican Church of Canada.  The gift guide is a joint initiative of the Departments of Philanthropy and Communications and Information Resources, and represents an unprecedented collaboration amongst all of the partners and charitable entities within the national church; bringing them together in one fundraising vehicle for the first time.

"Acts of Faith tells the story of our Church's many ministries in the service of God's mission in Canada and throughout the world" said Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, adding, "I hope people across the country will enjoy browsing through this guide and that they will find a particular ministry they would like to support in a very special way."

Since its establishment in 2008 the Department of Philanthropy has been working to redefine the meaning and methods of giving for the Anglican Church of Canada by instilling a theology of philanthropy and by developing innovative approaches to the church's philanthropic work.  The new gift guide is one such example.  Dr. Holland Hendrix, Executive Director of the Department of Philanthropy says that a critical success factor in this cultural shift is to strengthen the ACC's invitations for financial support.  Hendrix stresses that the national church should not assume that Canadian Anglicans understand the scope and breadth of its ministries and says "we need to be very intentional and specific about how we communicate with our loyal supporters — there is danger in our growing comfortable and complacent."

Acts of Faith will be circulated to all households currently receiving the Anglican Journal and will be inserted in the April issue.  Work is currently underway to develop other distribution streams for those who do not receive the Journal, including an all-parish mailing as well as an online portal for the guide.  At the present time, a downloadable PDF is available by visiting www.anglican.ca/giftguide and anyone interested can order additional copies of the guide by contacting the Department of Philanthropy by email at philanthropy@national.anglican.ca.

Join the big conversation before the big meeting

Anglican Church of Canada

February 23, 2010 - General Synod, the national meeting of the Anglican Church of Canada, is a big deal. It happens only once every three years. Over 300 delegates attend. Major decisions are made about the future of the church. General Synod 2010 is set to happen in Halifax, N.S. from June 3 to 11, 2010, and already Canadian Anglicans are kicking off the conversations online.

A specialized web forum has been set up for Canadian Anglicans to learn about and discuss the meeting's major topics. Called "Setting Sail: Conversations before General Synod 2010," this forum will feature articles on all the hot topics—Indigenous Ministries, human sexuality, governance changes, and more.

"Setting Sail" is only a conversation if you post your comments. So the General Synod Planning Committee invites you to read the articles, which will run every two weeks or so, and then note your thoughts and questions below. This will be a moderated forum that aims to hear a wide range of respectful voices.

Already Canon Barbara Burrows, the chair of the General Synod Planning Committee has written an introduction to the General Synod forum. She describes the upcoming meeting in Halifax and introduces the theme, "Feeling the Winds of God: charting a new course."

Be part of the prelude to this big meeting. Pray, learn the facts, and add your voice to these General Synod conversations.
